Google AI Cuts Free Access: Flash-Lite Only for All
6 Oct
Summary
- Free Google Gemini users will soon access only Flash-Lite model.
- Paid AI Plus subscribers will also lose access to Pro model.
- Changes affect AI model availability starting Friday, October 9.

Google is implementing new restrictions on its AI model access, impacting both free and some paid users. Effective Friday, October 9, free users of the Gemini app and website will be limited to the Flash-Lite model. This is the least capable of the available AI models.
Furthermore, users subscribed to the $5-per-month AI Plus plan will also lose access to the Pro model. They will be left with Flash and Flash-Lite options. The Pro model offers more advanced analytical capabilities for complex tasks.
These changes aim to guide users towards higher subscription tiers. Free users seeking Flash capabilities will need an AI Plus subscription, while AI Plus users needing the Pro model must upgrade further. The most expensive AI Pro plan will see a benefit, gaining access to the Deep Think reasoning mode.
