Audio engineer Cameron Oatley, professionally known as GoldenSound, has partnered with Status Audio to release a specialized version of their Pro X earbuds. Dubbed the Status Pro X GoldenSound Edition, these earbuds feature a unique tuning profile developed by Oatley, which he claims is the most accurate ever implemented in a true wireless product. The earbuds are set to launch in August with a price tag of $279, a $30 premium over the standard Pro X model.
The Pro X GoldenSound Edition retains the hardware of the original Pro X, including dual balanced armature drivers and a dynamic driver. However, the core innovation lies in Oatley's granular tuning approach, which considers the ear canal's impact, diverging from traditional methods like the Harman Curve that reference the outer ear. Oatley suggests that the Harman Curve, developed before the advent of true wireless earbuds, is often misapplied.
While acknowledging that AirPods Pro 3 may lead in active noise cancellation, Oatley emphasizes the Pro X GoldenSound Edition's superior audio fidelity, particularly in accurately reproducing bass frequencies. Initial listening tests suggest these earbuds deliver an expansive and clean sound, with a notably refined low-end response. Compared to the AirPods Pro 3, the GoldenSound Edition offers a more open soundstage, though some listeners might find the AirPods Pro 3's treble more immediately exciting.
Status provides several preset EQ options via the Status Hub app, but the proprietary GoldenSound profile cannot be directly adjusted. This necessitates trust in Oatley's extensive tuning process, which aims to correct common listener preferences for augmented bass or treble that may not represent true sound fidelity. This release signifies a potential shake-up in the true wireless earbud market.
