GitHub Welcomes AI Agents: Code with Claude & Codex

GitHub is enhancing its platform by integrating a wider array of AI coding agents, including Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex. This expansion allows users to select from Copilot, Claude, Codex, or even their own custom agents. These agents will function seamlessly across GitHub's website, mobile application, and VS Code, offering a unified user experience.

The new AI agents are available to Copilot Pro+ and Copilot Enterprise subscribers, with each agent session consuming a premium request during the current public preview phase. GitHub has provided guidance on assigning these agents, noting that multiple agents can collaborate to generate draft pull requests.

Developers can interact with these AI agents by leaving comments or requesting changes using specific commands, such as @claude or @codex. This integration aims to align the experience of working with AI agents with that of collaborating with human colleagues. Future agent integrations are planned, with collaborations in progress with companies like Google, Cognition, and xAI.
