AI's Free Ride Ends: Copilot Billing Shifts
28 Apr
Summary
- GitHub Copilot transitions to usage-based token pricing on June 1, 2026.
- Base subscription prices remain unchanged, but include AI Credits.
- Running out of AI Credits means paying for more or stopping work.

GitHub Copilot is set to implement a significant change in its billing structure, moving from its current premium request unit (PRU) system to a usage-based token pricing model starting June 1, 2026. This new system will consume monthly GitHub AI Credits based on token consumption at published API rates, reflecting the increased demands of its evolution into an agentic platform.
Base subscription prices for Copilot Pro and Pro+ will remain $10 and $39 per month, respectively, but will now include AI Credits equivalent to their dollar value. Code completions and Next Edit suggestions will not consume these credits. Copilot Business and Enterprise plans also maintain their current pricing per user while adding monthly AI Credits per seat.
Unlike the previous PRU system where users could downshift to less capable models when limits were reached, the new AI Credits model will halt services once credits are depleted, necessitating further payment. Organizations can benefit from pooled usage and administrative budget controls. GitHub plans to preview projected costs in early May to aid user transition.
