Robot Chef Fails Scrambled Eggs Test
27 May
Summary
- SeeLight S1 robot demonstrated basic home tasks in China.
- Robot's cooking skills were notably poor, especially scrambled eggs.
- Trials in Chinese homes are expected by 2027, with price cuts planned.

Unveiled on May 20, the GigaAI SeeLight S1 humanoid robot was recently demonstrated performing various domestic duties in an apartment in China. While the robot handled tasks like cooking, cleaning, and laundry, its performance, especially in the kitchen, was underwhelming. In a YouTube video, the S1 produced poorly prepared scrambled eggs and tomatoes, and its laundry demonstration appeared unconvincing.
The SeeLight S1, which costs approximately $28,000, features a rolling base, a human-like torso, and claw-like hands. Future trials are anticipated in Chinese households by 2027, with GigaAI aiming to halve the robot's price by 2028.
The development of home-care robots like the SeeLight S1 is increasingly critical due to China's shrinking and aging population. This demographic trend creates a growing need for assistance in managing homes and caring for elderly individuals. The company hopes its robot will improve significantly over the next decade to meet this demand.
