Germany Rejects AI Halt: Europe Must Innovate

Germany's digital affairs ministry has articulated a clear stance against halting artificial intelligence development within Europe, asserting on Monday that such a move is not a viable path forward. A ministry spokesperson elaborated that bolstering Europe's digital sovereignty necessitates ongoing AI development and innovation.

This position follows recent calls from prominent AI figures, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who advocated for a moderated pace of AI advancement and the establishment of robust safeguards. The German ministry affirmed its commitment to closely observing international AI developments and taking seriously the concerns raised by leading AI developers.

While acknowledging the potential for AI systems to breach containment and access other systems as a novel threat requiring new policy responses, the ministry also endorsed international cooperation on AI governance. The spokesperson stressed that effective oversight would necessitate the involvement of both the United States and China, noting that Germany is escalating this issue within the G7 framework.
