Germany's Navy Lasers: Drone Wars of the Future?

Germany is advancing its naval laser weapon program, with operational deployment planned by 2029. This initiative focuses on developing a directed-energy system capable of intercepting drones and potentially other aerial threats like guided missiles. A demonstrator system, currently operating at 20 kilowatts, has undergone extensive testing.

Future iterations of the laser weapon are slated to exceed 100 kilowatts, a substantial upgrade designed to engage faster and larger aerial targets. Over a year of trials, the demonstrator traversed approximately 28,000 nautical miles, successfully completing more than 100 live firing events against drones under diverse maritime conditions. This performance data suggests a high technology readiness for the system.

The program emphasizes domestic supply chains, with production anticipated largely within Germany. While the precise per-unit cost remains undisclosed, the containerized system is positioned as an affordable solution for protecting ports and sensitive facilities. Despite challenges in scaling power and managing thermal loads, officials express confidence in naval platforms' capacity to support these demanding weapon systems. Other European navies, including the UK and Belgium, are also pursuing similar directed-energy weapon technologies.
