Geely's 5-Min EV Charge: A Game Changer?
23 Sep
Summary
- Geely developed an EV battery charging in under five minutes.
- This ultrafast system charges 10-70% in 4.5 minutes.
- Carmakers aim to reduce reliance on CATL for EV batteries.

Geely has unveiled a new ultrafast EV battery system, capable of charging a battery from 10% to 70% in merely four minutes and 30 seconds. This development signifies a major advancement in the competitive electric vehicle battery market, directly challenging the dominance of established players such as CATL and BYD.
The company's announcement highlights a strategic shift by Chinese automakers, including Geely, Changan, and SAIC, to increase their in-house research, development, and production of batteries. This move aims to lessen their reliance on CATL, the world's largest EV battery maker, which supplies the most expensive component in electric vehicles.
Despite this trend, dubbed 'De-CATLisation' by Chinese media, industry analysts express skepticism about its long-term impact, citing CATL's commanding market share. Nevertheless, carmakers are investing billions in battery innovations to gain supremacy in range and charging speed amidst rising cost pressures in China's automotive market.
Meanwhile, China's vehicle exports have seen a substantial increase, with 7.15 million vehicles exported in the first eight months of the year. This surge in exports occurs as domestic sales of traditional petrol cars decline, while EV sales show slower growth. CATL's stock has experienced fluctuations, yet it maintains a significant market presence.
