Summary
- Fujifilm will invest 10 billion yen to increase magnetic tape production fivefold.
- Generative AI's data needs are driving increased demand for tape archiving.
- Tape offers low cost, offline security, and ransomware protection for data.

Fujifilm announced a significant investment of approximately 10 billion yen (about $63 million) to increase its magnetic tape production capacity fivefold. This expansion, targeting fiscal year 2025 levels, is primarily to meet the escalating data archiving demands fueled by the rise of generative AI. The investment will focus on the company's Kanagawa Factory, Odawara site.
This initiative represents Fujifilm's largest dedicated investment in LTO tape facilities. Spanning fiscal years 2026 through 2028, the project aims to enhance manufacturing and personnel for producing the latest FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium10 tape. Magnetic tape, though largely absent from consumer use, remains vital for enterprise data backup, particularly for cloud giants.
Major cloud and data center operators are increasing their reliance on magnetic tape storage due to its cost-effectiveness for large data volumes. Furthermore, the ability to air-gap tape cartridges offers a robust defense against sophisticated cyberattacks, including ransomware. Fujifilm's commitment underscores the enduring relevance of magnetic tape in modern data security and archiving strategies.
