Firefox & Chrome: Security Update Alert!
29 Oct
Summary
- Firefox 159 patches 167 security vulnerabilities, many high severity.
- Chrome's latest update resolves 52 security flaws, four critical.
- AI tools from OpenAI and Anthropic aided in discovering browser bugs.

Web users are advised to update their browsers immediately due to critical security patches released for both Firefox and Chrome. Mozilla's Firefox 159, available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, resolves 167 security vulnerabilities. Of these, 108 are classified as high severity, including numerous use-after-free flaws and issues that could allow attackers to bypass the browser's sandbox.
Google's Chrome has also received an update, version 56.0.8078.73/.74 for Windows and Mac, and 156.0.8078.73 for Linux, patching 52 security bugs. Four of these are critically rated and involve memory corruption, with potential for sandbox breaches. Similar to Firefox, Chrome's update also addresses use-after-free vulnerabilities.
Beyond security, Firefox 159 introduces new features like an enhanced macOS share picker and sidebar access to saved passwords. A significant new capability is Firefox's AI-powered Smart Window, which can monitor specific web pages for changes and notify users. This proactive feature utilizes AI to enhance user experience and awareness.
Interestingly, both browser updates highlight the increasing role of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity. Mozilla credited Amy Burnett of OpenAI for contributions to bug discovery, while Google acknowledged Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI for identifying several Chrome vulnerabilities. This marks a growing collaboration between AI developers and browser security teams.
