Digital Threats: Kolkata NGOs Fight Online Gender Violence

Organizations dedicated to combating violence against women are now confronting a new and pervasive threat: digital violence. Swayam, alongside other NGOs in Kolkata, has initiated a campaign to raise awareness about online dangers such as doxxing, stalking, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images. These actions are identified as control mechanisms that restrict women's participation and freedom of expression online, perpetuating gender inequalities.

The rise of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology presents a compounded threat, making women and girls increasingly vulnerable to blackmail and coercion. Cases of online fraud, cheating, and sexual crimes targeting women have been reported, with some victims facing rape and blackmail over altered images. Authorities emphasize the permanence of online content, urging individuals to exercise caution and secure their digital presence.

During a 16-day awareness drive, Swayam aims to educate the public, support survivors, and advocate for policy changes to create a safer digital environment. The initiative stresses that online crimes have severe real-world consequences and encourages women to overcome shame and stigma to report incidents. It highlights the global nature of online violence, which now occurs openly before a worldwide audience.
