Fender's Mix headphones offer a unique blend of customization and repairability, mirroring the design philosophy of Fairphone's Fairbuds XL. These headphones are constructed from four primary components: headband, ear cups, ear cushions, and battery, facilitating easy part replacement and personalization.
Initially, each part will be offered in five distinct colors, with ear cushions also available in various materials suited for different climates. The headphones utilize USB-C connections for modularity, demonstrating a solid build despite their customizable nature. Users can expect parts to click together securely, providing a robust feel.
The ear cushions magnetically attach, allowing for simple swaps and providing access to the USB-C Bluetooth transmitter and battery compartment. Fender plans to offer replacement cushions for $29 and batteries for $49, though availability dates are pending.
A key feature is the transmitter's ability to switch between lossless (LHDC v5), low-latency, and Auracast modes. The lossless mode is a notable benefit, especially for iPhone users. The low-latency mode claims sub-20-millisecond performance, suitable for gaming, while Auracast enables audio sharing with compatible devices and reception of broadcasts.
