Victims were lured by prerecorded messages claiming an expensive PS5 purchase from their Walmart account. When they pressed '1' to cancel, they were often connected to live operators. These individuals sometimes impersonated federal agencies to extract sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, exacerbating the potential harm.
The FCC has given SK Teleco a strict 48-hour deadline to mitigate the illegal traffic and 14 days to implement preventative measures. Failure to comply could lead to other providers being required to cease accepting call traffic from SK Teleco, marking a significant regulatory action against the provider.
