FBI Warns Hackers Exploit Streamers' Devices
29 Mar
Summary
- Hackers use residential proxies to hide illegal activities.
- Compromised devices can facilitate account takeovers and phishing.
- Update devices and avoid free VPNs to mitigate risks.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a public service advisory detailing a critical security threat to streamers. Hackers are leveraging residential proxy networks to route internet traffic through personal devices, obscuring their identities and locations while conducting illicit activities. These compromised devices, such as streaming boxes or smartphones, can be exploited for various cybercrimes.
The FBI highlighted that these networks enable dangerous activities, including account takeovers where attackers bypass geolocation alerts by using IP addresses from the victim's vicinity. Phishing infrastructure can also be hosted on these proxies. Furthermore, attackers can conduct brute force attacks by rapidly rotating IP addresses, circumventing security measures.
To combat this threat, the FBI recommends streamers avoid cheap or free access to paid services, exercise caution with free VPN applications, and refrain from downloading pirated content. Crucially, users should always use trusted app stores and maintain up-to-date firmware and operating systems with the latest security patches.
