Beware! Fake GTA 6 Demo is Dangerous Malware
25 Aug
Summary
- Fake GTA 6 demo downloaded from imposter websites.
- Malware steals passwords, cookies, and browser sessions.
- Chrome and antivirus software detect the malicious file.

A cybersecurity threat has emerged targeting fans eager for Grand Theft Auto 6 information. Malicious actors are circulating a fake Windows demo, masquerading as a playable preview of the highly anticipated game. These deceptive files are being distributed through imposter websites designed to mimic Rockstar Games.
The downloaded executable, gta6_installer.exe, is not a game demo but rather infostealing malware. Cybersecurity experts have identified it as belonging to the Vidar strain, which is known to steal passwords, cookies, and authenticated browser sessions. Worryingly, this type of malware can bypass two-factor authentication by exploiting session cookies.
While major browsers like Chrome flag the downloaded program as malicious and numerous antivirus providers detect the executable, vigilance is advised. This scam highlights the risks associated with seeking leaked game content. Previously, a 113GB torrent advertised as the game was also found to be malware. The legitimate Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a PC version's release date still unannounced.
