FAA Embraces Future: Air Taxis, Supersonic Jets Take Flight
21 Jul
Summary
- FAA is working to deploy air taxis and supersonic airplanes.
- An FAA pilot program aids electric vertical takeoff aircraft.
- New rules proposed to lift supersonic flight ban over land.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is advancing next-generation aviation, focusing on enabling air taxis, supersonic aircraft, expanded drone operations, and increased space launches. Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau indicated the agency is streamlining certification and regulatory processes to foster industry innovation.
The FAA launched a pilot program last year to facilitate the deployment of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Data from this initiative, involving eight companies across 26 states, will inform future certification efforts, aiming for safe and efficient integration of this new technology.
In parallel, the FAA proposed new rules in June to lift a 1973 ban on supersonic air transport over land. A second rule addressing noise thresholds is anticipated, with finalization expected by mid-2027. This move aims to modernize outdated regulations and potentially revive commercial supersonic passenger service.
Air taxi firms are concurrently pursuing approvals to commercialize eVTOLs for urban transportation, drawing parallels to the gradual rollout of autonomous vehicle technology. The FAA's regulatory approach seeks to balance safety with the pace of industry innovation, preparing for a future of advanced air mobility.
