EV Charging Surprise: A Smooth Road Trip!
18 Jul
Summary
- EV charging infrastructure has significantly improved since three years ago.
- A recent 600-mile road trip to Montreal experienced nearly flawless charging.
- Reliability of fast EV chargers has increased to the mid-90s since last year.

Prospective electric vehicle (EV) buyers often cite public charging infrastructure as a primary concern. However, recent experiences indicate a significant turnaround.
A recent 600-mile road trip to Montreal demonstrated vast improvements in EV fast charging. The journey, undertaken in an Audi e-tron with approximately 220 miles of range per charge, was nearly flawless. This experience contrasts sharply with a similar trip three years ago, which was marred by unreliable chargers and lengthy waits.
Navigation through apps like A Better Route Planner (ABRP) optimized charging stops, accounting for various factors. Chargers at locations like Rivian stations in Lebanon, New Hampshire, offered working equipment, ample amenities, and no queues. Even a minor issue at a Circuit Électrique station outside Montreal was resolved quickly by using their app.
Data supports these anecdotal improvements. The number of DC fast chargers in the U.S. has more than doubled since July 2023. Furthermore, charger reliability has seen a substantial increase, rising from 85% to the mid-90s on Paren's reliability index within the last year. While gaps and occasional malfunctions persist, the overall EV charging experience has become surprisingly positive.
