19 Jun
Summary
- The 'W' platform emphasizes verified users and privacy.
- Top European officials are adopting the new social network.
- It aims to host data on European servers, avoiding US Big Tech.

A new European social media platform named "W" has been launched, aiming to provide an alternative to dominant US Big Tech companies. Based in Sweden, "W" prioritizes verified human users, transparency, privacy, and free speech. The platform's beta version requires users to apply for vetting before they can post.
Prominent European leaders, including EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, are actively using "W." To gain access, users must verify their identity through real names or an anonymous option via the W Identity app, which scans personal identification documents directly on the user's device.
"W" plans to host its data exclusively on European servers managed by European companies, with investments restricted to continental entities. The platform intends to utilize services like Proton, a Swiss encrypted email provider, and UpCloud, a Finnish cloud computing platform, to align with EU privacy regulations. This initiative is part of a broader European movement towards digital and AI sovereignty.
The launch of "W" occurs amidst a growing desire in Europe to reduce reliance on US-based technology giants due to national security and data concerns. Several other European alternative social media platforms, such as Bulle, Eurosky, Monnett, and eYou, are also emerging, with some committed to building a "social stack" for the continent. However, experts note the challenges these platforms face in retaining user engagement compared to established services.
