Europe's First Logical Qubit Quantum Computer Unveiled

Finland will soon house Europe's first superconducting quantum computer equipped with logical qubits. Named LUMI-IQ, this groundbreaking system is slated for deployment at the LUMI AI Factory, a collaborative project supported by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and its participating countries: Finland, Czechia, Norway, and Poland. The installation will take place at CSC's new data center in Kajaani, Finland.
The LUMI-IQ system will be delivered in three distinct phases. Beginning in 2027, an IQM Halocene H4 system with 150 physical qubits and early quantum error correction capabilities will be installed. Subsequent upgrades in 2028 and 2029, culminating in the installation of an IQM Halocene H5 system, will further enhance the machine's ability to perform fault-tolerant quantum computations.
This staged approach is designed to facilitate early fault-tolerant quantum computing, enabling the system to sustain logical qubits and perform full logical operations. After its final upgrade, LUMI-IQ is expected to enable computations with up to 9 logical qubits. The integration of LUMI-IQ with the LUMI-AI computing environment will create a premier hybrid computing platform.
This powerful combination will allow for novel research workloads that merge traditional simulation, machine learning, and quantum algorithms. Such integration is anticipated to foster new avenues of scientific discovery for European end-users by leveraging the complementary strengths of AI, HPC, and quantum computing. The LUMI AI Factory aims to accelerate AI innovation across Europe.
