Two European defense technology companies, Germany's Hensoldt and Norway's Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA), have formed a strategic partnership to enhance Europe's independent intelligence and communications capabilities in space. The venture plans to begin deploying small satellites within approximately three years, addressing the growing strategic importance of space-based intelligence for European governments.
This collaboration leverages KDA's satellite manufacturing and operations expertise, including its ground station network via Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT). Hensoldt will contribute its advanced artificial intelligence-driven software and sensors, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR), electro-optical imagery, and radio frequency emissions analysis. The initiative aims to establish production facilities in Germany to bolster sovereign European defense capabilities.
The joint effort envisions an interconnected intelligence, surveillance, and targeting (IST) constellation in low Earth orbit, augmented by an integrated communications layer. By fusing data and employing on-board AI algorithms, the partnership seeks to provide Europe with a critical information advantage, ensuring greater security and deterrence in an increasingly complex strategic landscape.
