Europe's Rocket Reusability Takes Flight!
23 Feb
Summary
- Europe is advancing space access with reusable launcher projects.
- Themis T1H will conduct low-altitude hop tests in 2026.
- EU invests in new propulsion and game-changing innovations for space.

Europe is accelerating its access to space with a renewed focus on reusable launcher technology. The upcoming launch of the Ariane 6 in 2025, alongside the Vega C, signifies a strengthened European autonomous launch capacity. A pivotal step is the SALTO project, which will flight-test the Themis T1H reusable launcher first stage demonstrator. This initiative, involving 26 EU industry players, aims to demonstrate vertical take-off and landing capabilities for recovery and reuse.
The Themis T1H flight test campaign, targeting three low-altitude hops, is scheduled to begin in 2026 from ESRANGE Space Centre in northern Sweden. This project embraces a 'test and learn' approach to accelerate innovation and reduce costs. Concurrently, the ENLIGHTEN project is developing next-generation cryogenic propulsion technologies, utilizing advanced manufacturing and AI for cost reduction and sustainability. These efforts are supported by significant EU investment, including a €20 million call for game-changing innovations expected by 2026.
