EU Probes WhatsApp AI Access Rules
9 Feb
Summary
- EU eyes interim measures against WhatsApp over AI access.
- Meta allegedly violated antitrust laws by blocking third-party AI.
- Investigation launched on December 4, preliminary view shared Monday.

The European Commission has announced a preliminary finding that Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, may have violated antitrust regulations. The investigation, initiated on December 4, focuses on Meta's recent policy updates that allegedly block third-party AI assistants from functioning on WhatsApp.
This move by Meta, which would effectively favor its own Meta AI, has raised concerns about limiting competition in the rapidly evolving AI market. Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera stated the need to protect fair competition and ensure dominant companies do not leverage their position unfairly.
As a result, the EU is considering imposing interim measures. These actions aim to maintain competitor access to WhatsApp while the investigation proceeds, preventing potentially irreversible damage to the competitive landscape in Europe. Meta has responded by asserting that no intervention is necessary, citing numerous existing AI options available through various platforms.
