EU Invests €10B in AI Gigafactories to Boost Tech Power

The European Commission has announced a significant €10 billion investment to establish seven artificial intelligence gigafactories across the bloc. This initiative is a strategic move to bolster Europe's technological standing, aiming to close the gap with global leaders like the U.S. and China. The Commission anticipates attracting at least €20 billion in private capital to complement its funding, increasing the number of planned factories from five to seven due to substantial interest.

These advanced facilities will be comprehensive hubs, integrating cutting-edge AI processors, sophisticated software, robust cloud infrastructure, high-speed connectivity, and essential data centers. This development builds upon the existing 19 AI factories already operational within various EU member states. The goal is to provide Europe with the critical computing power necessary for accelerated AI development and deployment.

Major technology firms, including AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, have already signed letters of intent to supply the necessary chips for these gigafactory projects. Consortia comprising technology providers, cloud services, public bodies, and investors are eligible to apply. The application process concludes on November 12, with successful bidders expected to be announced in early 2027, and facilities operational within 18 months of contract finalization.
