Setapp Mobile Closes EU Operations Due to Costs
20 Jan
Summary
- Setapp Mobile, an alternative EU app store, is shutting down.
- The closure is attributed to complex and evolving business terms.
- Apple's Core Technology Fee contributed to the unviable business model.

Setapp Mobile, an alternative app store introduced in the European Union following the Digital Markets Act, will cease operations on February 16, 2026. Launched in September 2024 by Ukrainian developer MacPaw, the service offered access to numerous apps for a $9.99 monthly subscription.
The company cited "still-evolving and complex business terms" that do not align with Setapp's current business model as the primary reason for the shutdown. These terms are largely influenced by Apple's revised fee structure, including the €0.50 Core Technology Fee per install over one million, implemented to comply with the DMA.
MacPaw stated that the dynamic commercial conditions made their business model "not viable" for continued development or support of Setapp Mobile. While disappointed to discontinue the service for its EU user base and developer community, MacPaw expressed a continued passion for their vision and a commitment to pursuing other innovations.
Despite Setapp Mobile's closure, other alternative app stores like the Epic Games Store and AltStore continue to operate within the EU. The situation underscores the ongoing adjustments and challenges for developers navigating new app marketplace regulations.
