Empty Sites Spy On You: New Web Threat
2 Aug
Summary
- Over 90% of parked domains redirect to malicious sites.
- Blank pages can fingerprint devices without cookies.
- Typosquatting domains lead to phishing and malware.

Registered websites that are not yet developed pose a significant security risk, according to recent research. Over 90% of parked domains, often displaying blank pages or 'Coming Soon' messages, are now used to redirect visitors to fraudulent platforms, adult content, or scams. These sites can silently harvest user data, including IP addresses and location, by building browser fingerprints. This method of tracking is particularly concerning as it is not mitigated by clearing cookies or using private browsing modes. Threat actors also leverage typosquatting domains, which mimic well-known brands, to ensnare unsuspecting users into phishing attempts or drive-by downloads. Kaspersky recommends avoiding suspicious links and using web tracking blockers to mitigate these risks. Parked domains have become a common component of criminal infrastructure, demanding increased user caution.
