Custom Drone Achieves Historic 4+ Hour Flight
10 Jul
Summary
- Drone flight endurance record of 4 hours, 21 minutes, and 39 seconds achieved.
- Weight reduction and stronger airframe were key engineering improvements.
- Live software tuning helped optimize efficiency during the flight.

A pilot from Cape Town has officially broken the Guinness World Record for multirotor drone flight endurance. The custom-built aircraft remained airborne for an impressive 4 hours, 21 minutes, and 39 seconds, surpassing previous benchmarks.
Months of dedicated engineering and refinement led to this achievement. Key hardware modifications included reducing weight by approximately 26 grams through simpler clamp mounts and reinforcing the airframe with continuous carbon fibre tubes. These changes eliminated weak points and improved structural integrity.
Software advancements were equally critical. Initial tests revealed instability due to vibrations affecting the flight controller's sensors. Upgrading to a Cube Orange Plus system with isolated IMUs and implementing precise autopilot tuning addressed these issues. Live monitoring allowed for mid-flight adjustments, such as altering the flight path to incorporate more turns.
The drone consumed around 500 W during straight flight and approximately 450 W when turning, prompting strategic route changes. Flying at about 20 km/h, the drone ultimately completed its record-setting journey. This success highlights the importance of comprehensive engineering, including both mechanical and software optimizations, in achieving extended flight times.
