Micron Warns: RAM Shortage to Last Years
13 Jan
Summary
- DRAM shortages are expected to persist until at least 2028.
- High demand for AI data centers is the primary driver of shortages.
- New production facilities will take years to significantly increase output.

The ongoing global shortage of DRAM is projected to last until at least 2028, a situation exacerbated by the insatiable demand from AI data centers. Micron, a leading memory manufacturer, indicates that current production capacities are insufficient to meet this burgeoning need.
Christopher Moore, Micron's VP of Marketing, explained that building new production lines is a lengthy process. Although Micron broke ground on its ID1 facility in Idaho three years ago, with an expected online date of mid-2027, substantial output for the consumer market won't be realized until 2028 after all qualifications and customer approvals are complete.
This industry-wide issue means consumers will likely face higher prices for components such as RAM, laptops, and desktops. While Micron remains committed to servicing the consumer market, the immediate focus is on fulfilling the rapid expansion of the data center sector, making a return to normal pricing unlikely until AI demand stabilizes or significantly more supply becomes available.
