Smarter AI: Domain-Specific Models Outperform Giants
4 May
Summary
- Domain-specific small language models offer higher accuracy and cost savings.
- SLMs, with 1-13 billion parameters, require less computing power than LLMs.
- Secure AI architecture is critical, focusing on design rather than just geography.

Businesses are increasingly prioritizing domain-specific Small Language Models (SLMs) over general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs). While many executives focus on data residency and security perimeters, the core value lies in tailored AI performance. SLMs, typically ranging from 1 to 13 billion parameters, offer significantly higher accuracy, often three to five times greater than their larger counterparts.
These specialized models are also more cost-effective, requiring substantially less computing power and energy. This allows for easier deployment in private environments, either on-premises or within sovereign cloud infrastructures. Examples include financial SLMs for banks analyzing credit covenants and pharmaceutical SLMs detecting deviations in manufacturing.
Security is a critical component, but the emphasis is shifting towards architectural design rather than solely data location. Implementing security by design, using techniques like federated learning and differential privacy, ensures intellectual property protection and customer privacy. Mathematical guarantees, such as cryptographically signed audit trails for AI decisions, are becoming essential.
Regulations like the EU AI Act and India's DPDP Act will soon mandate these technical controls. By 2027, 'privacy-preserving by design' is expected to be a standard requirement in enterprise AI requests for proposals, highlighting the growing importance of specialized, secure AI solutions.
