- A tennis-ball-sized LED array produces 120,000 lumens of light.
- A custom water-cooling system keeps the powerful LED array operational.
- The portable device can light a match using only its visible light.

A remarkable DIY project has resulted in a tennis-ball-sized LED array that emits an astonishing 120,000 lumens of light, far surpassing typical household bulbs. Creating such intense brightness necessitated a robust cooling solution to manage the significant heat generated. YouTuber Matthew Perks detailed his process of building a portable water-cooling system for the LED array.
The innovative hexagonal water-cooling design features a central reservoir that also cools the LED's voltage regulators. The LED itself is mounted on a custom water block, with water circulating through six large copper radiators cooled by PC fans. The system is powered by a portable lithium battery, monitored by sensors and an Arduino.
This powerful light array, capable of igniting a match solely through its visible light output, was taken outdoors for testing. While the battery lasted only 15 minutes and became hot, the LED remained within safe operating temperatures. Even high-profile YouTubers have praised the impressive build quality of this homemade lighting device.
