Summary
- Olaf robot trained in two days using AI simulation.
- Robot designed by Disney Imagineering for theme parks.
- Olaf robot is not artificially intelligent, but teleoperated.

Disney Imagineering has unveiled a new Olaf robot, a sophisticated animatronic character designed to enhance theme park experiences. This lifelike robot, standing 35 inches tall and weighing 33 pounds, was trained in a mere two days using an advanced AI reinforcement learning simulation powered by an Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU. Although Olaf is not artificially intelligent and is controlled remotely via a Steam Deck gaming handheld, its movements are so convincing that it blurs the line between a robot and a living character. This breakthrough allows Disney to develop robots more rapidly, potentially populating future theme park lands with interactive characters. The Olaf robot is scheduled for an upcoming debut at Disneyland Paris on March 26th and later this summer at Hong Kong Disneyland, with plans for more advanced robotic characters to interact with beloved franchises. Disney Research is also contributing to the field by open-sourcing its simulation tools, such as the Newton Physics Engine and Kamino, enabling broader advancements in robotics and animatronics.
