Discord Bug Misbanned 8,000+ Accounts
7 Jul
Summary
- A bug incorrectly banned over 8,000 accounts since May.
- The system mistakenly flagged benign images like chessboards.
- All affected users have now been unbanned by Discord.

Discord has resolved a critical bug in its safety system that led to the erroneous banning of more than 8,000 accounts. The issue, which began in May 2026, mistakenly identified benign images as harmful. This resulted in approximately 8,000 users being banned for posting innocuous content, including images with grid-like patterns like chessboards or game inventories.
The platform's co-founder and CTO, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, confirmed that everyone affected by this glitch has now been unbanned. The safety system is designed to match content against known harmful material, but this process produced false positives. Typically, such flagged content would be reviewed by staff, with temporary restrictions imposed. However, a glitch caused the system to issue permanent bans instead of temporary holds.
Discord explained that when staff reviewed and cleared these accounts, the bug prevented the automatic lifting of the bans, leaving them in place. This technical error affected a broader range of users, including around 200 who posted 'grid-like' pictures and an additional 8,000 with other harmless images since May 2026. The company has taken steps to rectify the situation and reinstate all wrongly banned accounts.
