Discord Scans User Behavior for Age Verification

Starting this Wednesday, Discord will begin a phased rollout of age verification for all users. This initiative aims to comply with expanding age assurance laws in various regions, including Brazil and Texas. Discord's strategy relies on analyzing existing account data, such as account tenure, device activity, and usage patterns, to infer user age groups without requiring explicit biometric or ID submissions from the majority of its user base.

Discord emphasizes that this method does not involve collecting new data or analyzing message content. Instead, machine learning models predict whether an account belongs to an adult or a teen based on aggregate behavioral patterns. For confirmed adults, the platform experience will remain unchanged. However, teen accounts will face new restrictions, including automatic blocking from age-restricted servers and channels, and a separate inbox for message requests from unknown users.
