Delhi Tolls Go Barrier-Free: Drive Through, Pay Instantly!
1 May
Summary
- Barrierless toll collection system is currently being tested in Delhi.
- Tolls are automatically deducted using FASTag and vehicle recognition.
- The system is set to become operational nationwide by March 2029.

Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrierless tolling is undergoing testing in Delhi, with the Mundka toll plaza being a key site where vehicles are passing through without stopping. Commuters at Mundka have already experienced the system, receiving immediate toll deduction notifications from their FASTag wallets. This advanced technology utilizes FASTag and vehicle number recognition for seamless, automatic toll collection, a system that is scheduled to go live nationwide.
The first plaza to implement MLFF was in Choryasi, Gujarat, operational from May 1. Testing in Delhi focused on gadget and sensor performance. Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has contracted MLFF for 17 plazas and is expanding to 108 more. The Economic Survey projected a full rollout by March 2029, but officials are optimistic about an earlier completion.
This transition is deemed essential for India's expanding highway network, aiming to reduce logistics costs by eliminating waiting times and fuel wastage. Challenges like unreadable number plates are managed through FASTag data, and violations will result in e-notices, followed by penalties and restrictions on vehicle-related services if dues remain unpaid. Faulty deductions can be disputed within three days for verification and refund.
