Defense Satcom Demand to Skyrocket Past 7.5 Tbps

By 2035, the global defense satellite communications market is poised for substantial growth, with demand expected to exceed 7.5 terabits per second. This surge is primarily driven by the increasing integration of next-generation non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) constellations into military operations. These advanced networks are enhancing mobility, improving situational awareness, and bolstering the resilience of critical communication systems.

NGSO constellations are becoming pivotal for future military operations, offering the capacity, low latency, and robustness required. Experts note that distributed satcom architectures are significantly improving resilience against jamming and attacks. As defense entities increasingly adopt multi-orbit strategies, NGSO will play a key role.

Commercial satellite service revenues are projected to surpass $22.6 billion by 2035. Specifically, NGSO service revenues are anticipated to reach $21.3 billion, reflecting a strong compound annual growth rate. Although geostationary orbit (GEO) revenues may decline, GEO capacity demand is expected to triple.

The United States is projected to remain the dominant market, accounting for over half of global demand and nearly half of revenues. China is also a significant player, expected to follow with approximately 30% of global demand and revenues. This indicates the central role of satellite communications in the modernization efforts of major global powers.
