Web Under Siege: Terabit-Scale DDoS Attacks Surge

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are escalating, with reports indicating they are larger and more potent than ever. These coordinated assaults on servers are now frequently measured in terabits per second, stressing critical internet infrastructure. In the first half of 2026 alone, Cloudflare identified 935 attacks reaching or exceeding 1 Tbps, with a significant surge observed between the first and second quarters.

While individual attack sizes have not surpassed 2025's record-breaking figures, the sheer volume and scale of these attacks remain a critical concern. April 2026 saw a peak of 6.46 trillion site requests directed at attacked sites, amounting to 165 petabytes. This intense activity has reportedly eased, possibly due to law enforcement actions across 21 countries.

The report further notes an emerging connection between physical-world conflicts and cyberattacks. Tensions between nations have correlated with increased DDoS activity. Geographically, China surpassed the United States as the most attacked country in the second quarter of 2026, with the US and Turkey following.

Network administrators are advised to be aware of evolving attack vectors, such as the increased targeting of the Connectionless Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. For individual users, maintaining updated IoT devices and prioritizing security when purchasing connected-home hardware is crucial, given their frequent use in botnets.
