Summary
- Data centers can be a climate solution, not just a problem.
- AI's rapid growth may accelerate renewable energy adoption.
- Past data center booms spurred innovation in efficiency.

The increasing demand for data centers, fueled by the AI boom, can actually be a catalyst for renewable energy adoption, suggests environmental historian Paul Hirt. He notes that while data centers consume significant resources, past trends indicate that technological innovation driven by necessity can mitigate their environmental footprint. Hirt points to the 1990s, when the burgeoning internet led to a similar debate about data center energy use.
During that earlier period, companies innovated to create more efficient chips and cooling systems in response to rising energy costs and public concern. Hirt believes this capacity for innovation still exists and can be applied today. He advocates for solar and battery storage as the most viable and quickest energy sources for new data centers, contrasting them with the longer lead times for natural gas turbines.
Big tech companies are increasingly demanding 100% carbon-free energy, a push that has already influenced utility companies to invest more heavily in large-scale solar farms. While some current data center projects are opting for natural gas, the extended manufacturing timelines for turbines may lead them to reconsider. Hirt concludes that while public scrutiny is vital, data centers do not have to be detrimental to the environment, offering a potential pathway for sustainable AI development.
