20 Nov
Summary
- Couple heats home for only £40 monthly using a data center.
- Boiler replaced by over 500 computer banks in a garden shed.
- Project aims to reduce fuel poverty and transition to net zero.

In an innovative energy solution, Terrence and Lesley Bridges from Braintree, Essex, are now heating their home for a mere £40 per month. Their gas boiler has been replaced by a 'HeatHub' data center, housing over 500 computer banks within a garden shed. This system captures the heat generated by the computers, channeling it directly into the couple's hot water system.
Previously spending up to £375 monthly on heating and electricity, the Bridges' experience a dramatic cost reduction and consistent warmth throughout their bungalow. This pioneering project is part of UK Power Networks' SHIELD initiative, designed to help low-income households achieve net-zero energy consumption. The HeatHub, developed by Thermify, has been installed in collaboration with their landlords, Eastlight Community Homes.
This eco-friendly scheme, which also includes solar panels, demonstrates a practical approach to reducing fuel poverty and improving home energy efficiency. With plans to expand the initiative to 50 more homes and a broader ambition to scale up significantly, this data center heating solution offers a glimpse into a future of affordable, clean energy for many.
