Cyberattacks Now Threaten Lives, Not Just Data

Cyber threats have escalated beyond data theft, now posing direct risks to human lives by targeting critical infrastructure. Gaurav Shukla, a cybersecurity expert at Deloitte South Asia, highlights the growing danger from the convergence of Information Technology and Operational Technology, leaving sectors like aviation, healthcare, and utilities exposed.

Shukla explained that digital transformation has created significant opportunities for attackers to cause disruption. He cited examples such as a cyberattack on a connected car's steering system or a medical device that could alter patient data, both leading to potentially fatal outcomes. Similarly, hacks on power generation and transmission systems could cause widespread national blackouts.

With over 30 billion IoT sensors globally, the scale of connected devices is a major concern. While India's Digital Public Infrastructure, India Stack, is a global benchmark, its expansion into education and healthcare introduces new vulnerabilities. Shukla stressed that as India Stack accounts for a significant portion of digital payments, its cyber resilience is crucial for national security.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence is amplifying threats, increasing the velocity and expansion of attacks. Shukla emphasized the need for continuous testing against supply chain and AI-related risks. He called for cybersecurity and digital ethics to be integrated into primary school curricula, comparing their importance to learning a foundational language.
