Corsair Fights Fake RAM Returns with Clamshells
14 Feb
Summary
- Corsair now uses sealed clamshell packaging for DDR5 RAM kits.
- New packaging aims to prevent scammers from returning fake memory.
- Tamper-evident labels are being added to detect unauthorized openings.

Corsair has implemented new packaging strategies to thwart scammers targeting memory modules. The company is now using sealed plastic clamshells for its Vengeance DDR5 RAM kits, including both RGB and standard models. This packaging change, which has been in place for over a month, allows buyers and retail staff to easily inspect the contents, thereby preventing the return of counterfeit or outdated memory modules.
These measures are a direct response to incidents where scammers replace genuine RAM with older, worthless modules or even dummy components before returning them to stores. The high cost of DDR5 RAM has made it a target for such fraudulent activities, mirroring similar scams that have affected expensive graphics cards. The new clamshells also feature tamper-evident labels to further deter tampering.
While the clamshell design aims to outsmart counterfeiters, it has raised some concerns regarding consumer accessibility and environmental impact. Corsair notes that the packaging is made from recycled materials. Meanwhile, lower-tier RAM modules will continue to use traditional boxes but will be updated with security labels soon. Other memory manufacturers may adopt similar packaging solutions.
