Digit Errors: When Scanners Swap Numbers!
3 Aug
Summary
- Scanners accidentally replace digits with others via image compression.
- Weather forecasts show slight variations due to processor rounding errors.
- Bitcoin mining completion date may be decades sooner than expected.

A German computer researcher recently found his scanner replacing digits with entirely different ones. This unexpected alteration was caused by the JBIG2 image compression technique, which attempts to correct unclear data by using similar image patches from elsewhere in the document, essentially acting like a picture autocorrect.
This phenomenon, where a machine substitutes data, has broader implications. Researchers found that weather forecast outputs can vary slightly due to how different supercomputer processors handle rounding errors in long numbers. These subtle differences, when amplified over time, can lead to significantly different predictions.
Furthermore, the supply of Bitcoin is affected by processing speeds. Initially, experts believed all 21 million bitcoins would be mined by 2140. However, due to increased processor speeds, the entire supply might be exhausted as much as 55 years sooner than previously anticipated.
