- Agents can trade spot and derivatives; equities planned.
- x402 protocol enables agents to pay for data and compute.

Coinbase has launched AI agents that can execute cryptocurrency trades and purchase premium research, aiming to capitalize on the growing trend of AI agent internet traffic. Users can connect these agents to their main accounts or utilize a separate sandbox for operation. The agents are equipped to analyze and execute trades using platforms like Coinbase Advanced, with capabilities extending to portfolio rebalancing and advising on trades. Currently, these agents support crypto spot and derivatives markets, with future plans to include equities and prediction markets. Coinbase is leveraging its open x402 payment protocol, developed in collaboration with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near, enabling agents to access services and data APIs without requiring user logins or subscriptions. This initiative builds on Coinbase's prior investments in AI, including AgentKit and an AI-powered assistant launched last year. Lincoln Murr, Head of AI Product at Coinbase, highlighted the goal of creating transacting agents and combining exchange access with a native payments protocol for a future dominated by agent interactions. The rapid development in agentic payments is also drawing attention from global financial regulators, with the Financial Stability Board (FSB) emphasizing the need for robust safeguards against AI risks.
