City Detect, a startup focused on using artificial intelligence to help local governments monitor urban health, announced a $13 million Series A funding round led by Prudence Venture Capital. The company, founded in 2021, aims to combat urban blight and decay through advanced computer vision technology.
Their system utilizes cameras mounted on public vehicles, such as garbage trucks, to capture images of surrounding buildings. This data is then analyzed using computer vision to identify issues like graffiti, illegal dumping, and maintaining building code compliance. This AI-driven approach allows for the detection of thousands of problems weekly, far surpassing manual inspection rates.
City Detect's technology, which is patented, ensures privacy by blurring faces and license plates. It can also distinguish between vandalism and street art, and helps governments track building maintenance by identifying structural roof issues or storm damage. The company currently operates in at least 17 cities, including Dallas and Miami.
With this latest funding, City Detect plans to hire more engineers and further develop its storm damage detection technology. The company also aims to expand its operations across the United States, reporting significant efficiency gains for municipal departments and quicker resolution of urban blight issues.
