Summary
- App uses unique RAW image processing from film production.
- It quickly became the top paid download after social media promotion.
- The app offers stylized shots without manual adjustments.
Cinematographer Steve Yedlin has launched the Chromagraph Camera app for iPhone, which offers a unique approach to mobile photography by processing RAW image data with formulas similar to those used in film production. This specialized image processing aims to deliver stylized shots with specific tones, colors, and grain effects.
Following a late October promotion by director Rian Johnson on social media, the app quickly achieved popularity, becoming the top paid download in the iOS store. Chromagraph Camera is available for a one-time fee of $13 and currently supports only still photos, with no video capabilities.
Yedlin emphasizes that the app is not intended to replace a professional camera or editing tool but rather to provide a curated aesthetic. He, along with Johnson and programmer Eric Cameron, developed the app over several months to center around their distinct color preferences. Despite its capabilities, Yedlin acknowledges the inherent hardware limitations of smartphones, noting that software can only influence the final image to a certain extent within Apple's parameters.
The Chromagraph Camera app offers a consciously "opinionated" look, providing an artistic interpretation rather than a neutral rendering of reality. Users can preview the processed image after capturing it, and further adjustments to exposure or texture are possible within the app.
