Chrome Tests AI-First Search Experience

Google is currently testing a novel feature within its Chrome Canary browser that could fundamentally alter the search experience. This under-development functionality aims to direct all user search queries, entered into the address or search bar, straight into AI Mode. This represents a notable departure from the current system, where users typically see AI Overviews followed by traditional search results, requiring an additional step to engage with AI Mode.

The new feature, identified as a hidden flag named "Fulfill Searchbox Queries in AI Mode," is not enabled by default in the Canary build. Its description indicates a broad application across Mac, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. While users can reportedly enable it through Chrome settings, potentially for a single browsing session, its experimental nature is emphasized. Google has stated that this feature is purely for exploration, with no immediate plans for a public release.

This development aligns with Google's broader strategy to enhance its search engine with artificial intelligence. At a recent I/O event, the company unveiled what it described as its most significant search upgrade in over 25 years, heavily featuring AI Mode.
