China Embraces AI: Trust Soars While West Lags

Public trust in artificial intelligence varies dramatically across the globe, with China demonstrating exceptionally high confidence compared to the United States and other Western countries. A recent survey indicates that 87 percent of Chinese individuals trust AI, a figure substantially higher than the 32 percent recorded in the US. This trust is linked to an expectation that AI will contribute to resolving pressing societal issues, including climate change and poverty.

More than half of Chinese respondents embrace greater AI integration, whereas a mere 17 percent of Americans share this sentiment. This disparity is even more pronounced among younger demographics, with 88 percent of Chinese aged 18-34 trusting AI, compared to 40 percent of their American counterparts. This significant trust gap presents a dual challenge for businesses and policymakers.

In markets with high trust, the focus is on responsible deployment and demonstrating tangible benefits. Conversely, in low-trust markets, rebuilding confidence in the institutions behind AI technology is paramount. This comes amid a fierce technological competition between the US and China, with both nations developing advanced AI models, though China is making significant strides with cost-effective open-source language models.
