China Hacking: Everyday Devices Now Espionage Tools
23 Apr
Summary
- China-linked hackers use everyday devices for espionage.
- UK and allies warn of persistent Beijing-backed cyber-attacks.
- Compromised routers, printers, and cameras facilitate attacks.

British businesses must bolster their defenses against a sophisticated Chinese espionage campaign that weaponizes everyday internet-connected devices. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), alongside agencies from nine other nations including the US and Germany, has alerted companies to persistent attempts by Beijing-backed groups to hijack equipment like wifi routers.
These compromised devices form "covert networks" or "botnets," which are then used to stage surveillance and data theft. The NCSC highlighted that the majority of China-linked threat actors employ this technique, often utilizing small office/home office routers, Internet of Things devices, and smart devices. This represents a major tactical shift, obscuring the origin of cyber-attacks and making them harder to trace.
Notable groups, such as the China-backed Volt Typhoon, have been identified using these covert networks to infiltrate critical infrastructure. The NCSC advises companies to map their IT systems, implement multifactor authentication for remote access, and limit external device connections to mitigate these evolving threats.
