OpenAI has enhanced its ChatGPT service with a new Google Drive plug-in, enabling users to access and edit files and folders directly within the chatbot interface. This update, which began rolling out on August 13, 2026, is accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Business subscribers on the web.
Users can integrate their Drive files by selecting the Google Drive plug-in and then browsing their library. Once files are opened in the chat, users can request ChatGPT to summarize, analyze, compare, or generate new content from them. Crucially, any edits performed within ChatGPT will be automatically saved to the source file in Google Drive, provided the necessary permissions are granted.
This new functionality extends to entire folders, allowing ChatGPT to apply changes to all contained files. While Google offers its own AI features within Drive, this integration provides an alternative AI assistant for ChatGPT users. Support for mobile applications is anticipated, though no specific timeline has been provided. OpenAI also recently introduced a Computer History feature for macOS.
