Summary
- ChatGPT can now make restaurant reservations and waitlists.
- The integration is currently available in the U.S. and Canada.
- Competitors like Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot also have similar booking features.
OpenAI's ChatGPT has added a new feature allowing users to make restaurant reservations and join waitlists through the chatbot interface, expanding its utility to include dining arrangements. This integration, announced on Monday, is initially available for users in the U.S. and Canada and leverages restaurants that utilize Yelp's Guest Manager system for reservations.
This functionality builds upon a previous partnership between Yelp and ChatGPT, which began in July and enabled the chatbot to provide recommendations based on Yelp's extensive local business data. While users can initiate bookings via ChatGPT, any modifications or cancellations to reservations must be managed through the Yelp app itself.
This development places ChatGPT in direct competition with other AI assistants. Google's Gemini offers similar capabilities, allowing users to find and book tables via OpenTable through Reserve with Google. Microsoft Copilot also integrates with OpenTable for booking, though like ChatGPT's Yelp integration, post-booking management is handled outside the chatbot.
