Google is set to enable free Gmail users to change their email usernames, a feature previously exclusive to Workspace administrators. This landmark update means millions of users can finally modify their primary email address. The change will allow users to retain access to their old email for receiving messages, ensuring no communication is lost. Furthermore, all existing data within the Google account, including photos and past emails, will be preserved, and users can continue signing into various Google services with either their old or new address.
Despite the long-awaited functionality, strict limitations are in place. Users will be unable to change their email address again or delete the new one for a period of 12 months following the initial modification. Google has not yet announced a specific rollout date or prioritized regions, but preliminary indications suggest that India might be among the first to gain access, as the support page currently appears in Hindi.
To access the feature, users can navigate to their Google Account settings, select 'Personal Information,' then 'Email,' and look for the 'Change email address for your Google Account' option. This development follows Google's recent efforts to remove dormant Gmail accounts for cybersecurity reasons, though it remains unclear if these purged addresses will become available for reuse.
