Cape Town Greenlights Data Centers Amid Eco-Concerns

Cape Town's municipal authorities have given the green light to Equinix's proposal for developing two data centers within the city. This significant approval occurred despite voiced objections from activist groups. These groups expressed concerns regarding the project's substantial water consumption, electricity demand, and overall environmental footprint.

The planned facilities represent a major investment and are anticipated to require around 170 megawatts of power capacity. This capacity requirement positions the project as one of the most significant data-center developments proposed in South Africa. Activist organizations, including Housing Assembly and Foxglove, had formally opposed the application, citing insufficient disclosure on environmental impact and resource needs.

Equinix has confirmed its acquisition of land in Cape Town but stated that a detailed site development plan has not yet been submitted. The company emphasized its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement should development proceed. Concerns persist among activist groups, who are evaluating the possibility of an appeal against the approved development.
